In cooler climates the Royal Poinciana may not flower as much as in warm, wind-sheltered environments, and may have a longer, pronounced period of shedding foliage. Dry climates may promote a deciduous habit. Mature heights can reach 12m (39.3’) with a canopy spread 15m-20m (49’-65.6’) across, broader than its height. Canopy has large, low-growing, wide-spreading and also upright branches, multiple leaders. Trunk is stocky, grey, pale brown, smooth, with bark texture of grain, ribs, scars and cracks; buttress; surface roots. Royal Poinciana will stress in cold climates, thrives in tropical, warm, sheltered climates; prefers sandy - loamy soil, aerated and well-draining soil, no wet, heavy, clay soil. Leaves: Fern-like, large, compound, bipinnate, 30cm-70cm (11.8”-27.5”) length, on a petiole up to 9.5cm (3.7”) length, with 12-20 opposite pairs of primary pinnae leaves, each pinnae up to 10cm (3.9”) length. Each primary leaf has 15-25 pairs of leaflets, elliptic - oblong, bright green maturing to darker green. Young stems of branches can have numerous dotted spots of lenticels. Flowers: Large inflorescence, terminal corymbs, with orange - scarlet, rotate flower on long pedicels. The pedicels can reach 8cm (3.1”) length. The flower is 5cm-8cm (1.9”-3.1”) across with 5 sepals and 5 petals, the petals are green on the outside and red inside. One of the petals can have a white - yellowish colour with red spots and streaks. Fruit: Long, wide, flattened legume 30cm-45cm (13.7”-17.7”) length x 5cm (1.9") width, pendulous, green ripening to brown; splitting open when mature to reveal numerous seeds, up to 2cm (0.78”) length, yellow - brown, oblong - ovoid.
