You Can’t Fix It | Matthew 5:3-12 | Sermon from 02-01-2026 | First Good Shepherd Lutheran

In today’s Gospel, Jesus repeats two words nine times: “Blessed are.” They are beautiful, and they can also be confusing if we hear them like a checklist or a set of rules to earn God’s favor. This sermon pushes back on that. The crowd chases Jesus for miracles and celebrity. The disciple follows Him up the mountain to hear His Word and cling to it. And here is the hard truth we all run into eventually: we cannot fix our life with God. We cannot make God forgive us. Most of the time, we cannot even fix what is broken around us the way we want to. That is where the Gospel hits with real comfort. Jesus is not asking you to earn a blessing. He gives it. He carries mercy, forgiveness, and the kingdom of God to sinners who cannot rescue themselves. When we stop leaning on our own insight and trust the Lord with all our heart, we find that we are not just searching for the kingdom. In Christ, we are inside it.
