The journey begins in Tuba City, where U.S. 160 officially starts at its junction with U.S. 89. Almost immediately, the road passes the intersection with Arizona State Route 264 before curving northeast across the high desert plateau. This part of the drive carries travelers through the Navajo Nation, with long stretches of open roadway framed by red rock formations and distant mesas that set the tone for the entire route. Continuing east, U.S. 160 passes through the community of Tonalea and shortly after intersects with Arizona State Route 98 — a junction known for its convenience stop, where travelers can fuel up before venturing further into the desert.
