99% Reduction in Waterborne Illness in Papua New Guinea River Villages - How HOPE worldwide Did It

HOPE worldwide was joined by a group of energetic volunteers from Melbourne, Australia to bring hundreds of water filters, provided in partnership with Wine to Water (WTW), to a rural village in Papua New Guinea (PNG). While there, HOPE worldwide COO Dave Tomlinson and the HOPEww team met with officials from the Ministry of Health and several provincial health authorities to discuss expanding our donations of essential medicines to PNG. The HOPEww team traveled by small boat to Jangit, a very remote village in the East Sepik River province, and deployed the water filters. It was incredible to watch villagers see and drink clean water for perhaps the first time in their lives. 11 months after the delivery, cases of waterborne illnesses in those villages were reduced by over 99%, dropping from over 700 cases down to only 3. Seeing the profound impact on the village’s health, the provincial government of Papua New Guinea is now partnering with HOPEww to make water filters even more accessible to other rural parts of the country.
