Agadir is a major coastal city in southwestern Morocco, located on the Atlantic Ocean at the northern edge of the Souss River mouth, near the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. It’s the capital of the Souss-Massa region and one of Morocco’s most important urban centers. The city was largely destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1960 (which killed around 12,000–15,000 people), leading to a complete modern rebuild. As a result, Agadir stands out from more traditional Moroccan cities like Marrakech or Fez — it features contemporary architecture, wide boulevards, hotels, and a resort-like atmosphere rather than ancient medinas. Today, Agadir is Morocco’s premier seaside resort and “winter sun” destination, especially popular with Europeans thanks to its exceptionally mild climate. It enjoys around 300 sunny days a year, with a semi-arid (hot semi-arid) climate: mild winters (average highs around 20–22°C / 68–72°F in January) and warm summers (highs around 27–30°C / 81–86°F), with very little rainfall, mostly in winter. 6 “LARGE” 7 “LARGE” 8 “LARGE” The centerpiece is its long, wide sandy beach — about 9–10 km of golden sand in a sweeping bay — lined with a palm-tree promenade perfect for walking, cycling, or enjoying cafés and restaurants. 0 “LARGE” 2 “LARGE” 3 “LARGE” The population of the city proper is around 500,000–520,000 (based on recent 2024 census figures), though the wider urban area is larger. Key attractions include: • The bustling Souk El Had market (one of Morocco’s largest traditional souks) • The rebuilt Kasbah (Agadir Oufella) hilltop ruins with panoramic views and the famous Arabic inscription “God, Country, King” visible from below • A modern marina and busy fishing port • Nearby day trips to Souss-Massa National Park, Paradise Valley, argan forests, or Taghazout for surfing 4 “LARGE” 5 “LARGE” Agadir offers a relaxed, beach-focused vibe with water sports, golf, luxury resorts, fresh seafood, and a mix of Moroccan and international influences. It’s less chaotic than northern cities, making it ideal for unwinding by the ocean while still experiencing Amazigh (Berber) culture in southern Morocco.
