In 2013, the New South Wales government proposed extending the existing North West Rail Link into a metro-style tunnel that would traverse under Sydney Harbour and through the Central Business District (CBD). This ambitious plan aimed to alleviate congestion and provide a modern, efficient transit option for the growing city. By 2014, the project was officially announced as the Sydney Rapid Transit initiative, which later evolved into the Sydney Metro. The project received planning approval in December 2018, marking a significant step forward in Sydney's public transportation infrastructure. 🏗️ Construction and Development: Construction commenced in 2017, with major tunneling operations beginning in 2018. Utilizing advanced tunnel boring machines, the project team excavated twin tunnels beneath Sydney Harbour, connecting the northern suburbs to the CBD. This phase included the development of seven new underground stations: Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street (now Gadigal), Central, and Waterloo. A notable feature of the project was the extensive upgrade to Central Station, which involved the construction of two new underground platforms and a new underground concourse known as Central Walk. This $955 million upgrade aimed to modernise one of Sydney's busiest transport hubs and improve passenger flow and accessibility. 🚇 Opening and Operations: The first phase of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, covering the 16-kilometer stretch from Chatswood to Sydenham, opened on August 19, 2024. This phase introduced fully automated, driverless trains to Sydney's rail network, marking a significant technological advancement in the city's public transportation system. The second phase, extending the metro line from Sydenham to Bankstown, is currently under construction and is expected to open in 2026. This extension will convert the existing Bankstown railway line to metro standards, providing a seamless and efficient connection for commuters in Sydney's southwest. 🔮 Future Expansion: Looking ahead, the Sydney Metro network is set to expand further. The Sydney Metro West project, connecting the CBD to Westmead, is in development, aiming to enhance connectivity between the city's central and western regions. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the potential extension of the metro network to the Western Sydney Airport, further integrating the city's transportation infrastructure. ▶ My socials Instagram: / col_jung Blog: / col-jung X: / col_jung Work: / @col_builds Investing: / @col_invests Gaming: / @col_loads Films: / @col_shoots Hotels: / @col_travels Gear: / @col_reviews ▶ Music The Long Retreat" by Birocratic (http://birocratic.lnk.to/allYL) ▶ Walking Rewards I earn money on two apps making walking videos: https://stepn.com https://stepngo.com #walking #travel #sydney
