Maybe it's only fitting that a franchise which began with the juxtaposition of two wildly disparate elements has now come full circle and given birth to a new contradiction which is sure to confound its players just as much, if not more. The Tomb Raider of 1996 defied genre expectations by combining an oversexualized, unabashedly crowd-pleasing female protagonist on the one hand with those austere and foreboding ruins, cerebral puzzles and arcane contraptions on the other. And - as has been pointed out by numerous critics already - Tomb Raider 2013's deadly serious origin story of a physically vulnerable, woefully inexperienced and emotionally traumatized Lara Croft is equally at odds with the series' newfound focus on brutal combat, visceral melee attacks and decisive headshots. The new game is playing catch up with modern gameplay conventions (or clichés, if you will) whereas Core Design's original was arguably leading the next-gen charge of that era when it first appeared on the Sega Saturn 17 years ago. Whether it was still worth rebooting Lara for the second time in less than a decade remains to be seen, but I hear the game gets especially enjoyable once it stops trying to beat the poor girl into a bloody pulp...
