Jeepin' in the Bald Eagle State Forest Jeepin’ in the Bald Eagle State Forest out in central Pennsylvania. There is some really great country in the Bald Eagle State Forest. We started day 1 in Reeds Gap State Park and finished in Poe Paddy State Park. The roads and trails we traveled on for day 1: • Old Lancaster Valley Road • Knob Ridge Road • Red Ridge Road • Strong Mountain Road • Havice Valley Road • Poe Paddy Drive Some of these roads were only accessible with 4WD vehicles, and most are not maintained especially in the winter. There were some really great lookout points along Poe Paddy Drive: Raven’s Knob West, Ingleby View and Penns View. These were great stopping points to check out the scenery. Day 2 started in the northern tier of Bald Eagle State Forest just off of I-80. We drove up Riansares Road to the top of Riansares Mountain. There was a nice lookout point up there as well – probably the best view of the trip. The approximate elevation at the top of Riansares was 2250 ft. From there we drove along Cherry Run Road and Pepper Run Road – both 4WD trails. After finishing up here we headed east to McCall Dam State Park to take in the view from Black Gap Vista. The final leg of the trip was the most difficult trail of all – Duncan Trail. This is a multi-use trail and very narrow with a lot of brush. If you are worried about scratching your Jeep, then this trail is not for you. It was challenging and a bit rocky and required 4WD low the entire length of the trail. The entrance had a makeshift arch from a fallen tree. Overall the trail was about 2 miles long and took an hour to complete. Thanks to Purple Lizard Maps.
