Rita Hester, a transgender woman, was murdered in her apartment in Boston in 1998. The case was never solved. For Hester’s family and LGBTQ+ people across the world, her murder also represents the disregard police and media show for Black transgender murder victims, the unsolved case casting a long shadow on Boston detectives. Data from TGEU finds that nearly 300 transgender people were murdered between October 1, 2024 and September 30, 2025. 88 percent of these victims were Black or brown. Hester's murder inspired Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), an annual international vigil that honors transgender murder victims. In June 2025, a new park named after Hester opened in the Allston/Brighton neighborhood of Boston near her former home. And two years ago, when this video was published, the Boston Police Department renewed its request for information from the public about her murder. “Rita’s murder shook the LGBTQ+ community,” the Boston Police Department said in a media statement at the time. “The Boston Police Unsolved Homicide Unit is actively reviewing the facts and circumstances surrounding this murder.” Two years later, the case remains unsolved. "We remind the public that anyone with any information or a tip, no matter how small, should contact the department," said BPD spokesman Sgt. Det. John Boyle, when asked about the case's status recently. "It remains a very active case and we haven't forgotten about it."
