SELF-PACED is one of 4 songs in the "Sonic and The Black Sun" story. Pace the Hedgehog is an alternate version of Sonic, he lives in a world of peace, a world where there really was no need for a hero, evidently he is not trained to be one. The song takes place after "???", Pace flees from the scene after having his first encounter with the Shadow, leaving Brains, Brawn and Chef Saute to fend him off. He stumbles into a forest, finding an old book sitting atop a stump, he begins to wander while giving it a read, learning about a power that could help him defeat this new threat and finally be the hero he is expected to be, the Chaos Emeralds. Pace arrives at the ancient castle where the emeralds have lay for years, he begins to search the castle for them, unknowing that the threat he wanted to use the emeralds to defeat, had already beat him to the punch. Shadow, a creature seeming like it was almost made of mist and fog, created from the reversed energy of the emeralds, with it's mind being set on only one goal, use it's power to rule the world and make it into it's perfection, every being under one mind. The more creatures Shadow inflicts with his possession, the more his knowledge of the world grows, and the more his hunger to perfect it follows. Pace and Shadow fight back and forth for control of the emeralds, and Pace's body, as Shadow seeped himself into Pace's brain, he began to know more and more, learning about what the emeralds can really do. He uses this knowledge to distort Pace into a warped version of his "Hyper" form, and brings him into the sky to help him cover the sun with his essence, truly shining himself over the world at last... for now.
