THE QUANTUM ERASER Why Einstein's Causality Is Wrong! Richard Feynman explains

In 1999, scientists performed an experiment that should be impossible. They fired photons at a detector screen. The photons hit. The experiment was over. Past tense. Already happened. Then, AFTER the photons had already been detected, the scientists made a choice about a different measurement. And that choice—made in the future—changed how the photons had behaved in the past. Not what the scientists knew about the past. The actual behavior. The photons that had already hit the screen somehow "knew" what choice would be made seconds later, and they acted accordingly. This is the delayed choice quantum eraser experiment. And it's not theoretical. It's been performed hundreds of times. The results are always the same. The future affects the past. Not metaphorically. Actually. In this video, we break down exactly how this experiment works, why it seems to violate causality, and what it means for our understanding of time itself. What you'll discover: → The double slit experiment: why observation changes reality (review with crucial detail) → How the quantum eraser setup works: signal and idler photons explained → The delayed choice: why the future measurement determines past behavior → Why "the photon didn't know" explanations don't work → Three attempts to escape the paradox (and why they all fail) → Four interpretations: block universe, retrocausality, many worlds, Copenhagen → Cosmic scale implications: how measurements today shape billion-year-old photon behavior → What this means for causality, time, and the nature of reality This isn't about quantum weirdness being "spooky" or mysterious in a vague way. This is about specific, measurable results that force us to rethink what we mean by past and future. When the signal photon hits the detector, it's over. Done. Recorded. But when you later decide whether to erase which-path information about the corresponding idler photon, the signal photon's behavior changes retroactively. If you erase, it shows interference (wave behavior). If you keep the information, no interference (particle behavior). The choice comes AFTER the detection. But it determines what happened BEFORE the choice was made. Three ways to interpret this (all uncomfortable): 1. BLOCK UNIVERSE: Past, present, future all exist simultaneously. Time doesn't flow. The photon's behavior is consistent with the entire 4D structure of spacetime, including "future" events. Nothing changes retroactively because there is no "retro"—all times are equally real. 2. RETROCAUSALITY: The future genuinely affects the past. Causality runs both directions. The universe enforces consistency but allows effects to precede causes. Your choice now constrains what was true then. 3. MANY WORLDS: All outcomes happen. When you make your choice, you don't change the past—you select which branch of reality you're in. The photon took both paths in some branches, one path in others. (Copenhagen interpretation: "Shut up and calculate." Don't ask what's really happening.) None of these are comfortable. All of them require giving up something we consider obvious about how time works. But one of them must be true. The experiment forces it. The implications are staggering. Light from distant galaxies has been traveling for billions of years. That light passed through gravitational lenses, taking multiple paths. When we measure it today and choose whether to erase which-path information, we're determining whether that photon interfered with itself billions of years ago. Our measurement now shapes what was true in the early universe. This isn't philosophy. It's physics. Measurable. Repeatable. Real. The quantum eraser doesn't just challenge our intuition. It breaks the fundamental assumption that the past is fixed and independent of what we do now. The past and future are quantum-correlated. Entangled across time. What you do now matters for what was true then. And we still don't fully understand how. 📚 BASED ON: Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser (Kim et al., 1999) Quantum mechanics and wave function collapse Wheeler's delayed choice experiments Interpretations of quantum mechanics ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: This content is original educational material created for physics education.
