Left hand thumb position on the guitar is one of the most important aspects of left hand technique. The left hand thumb position affects almost everything else that the left hand does when playing guitar, and so it's essential to correct any bad habits in this regard, as soon as possible. This is the first in a series of guitar tips videos. In this series I'll highlight common problems that I've noticed in guitar students over the years. I'll also offer solutions to these problems. So, today's guitar we shine the spotlight on one of the most common technique issues: the left-hand thumb position. Whilst there are no fixed rules about how to position or use our hands and fingers, there are plenty of good reasons to do certain things one way rather than any others. And whilst there are exceptions, generally speaking, most great guitar players play bar chords with the left-hand thumb print approximately level with fingers 1 and 2 of the left-hand. In the early days of guitar playing, left hand technique is fairly low down the list of priorities. After all, it's important to just get playing to begin with. Few people would keep up the guitar if they had to master perfect left hand technique before they got on with playing any actual music. Many guitar players start off playing with the left hand thumb pointing sideways towards the headstock. The result is that, at least in part, some of the pressure on the strings comes from some leverage provided by the wrist. This is not how most great guitar players play typical bar chords; and playing this way could easily lead to pain in the future. If you currently play bar chords with your left-hand thumb pointing sideways, then I encourage you to change your grip to match the approach demonstrated in this video. The result is more efficient use of energy (which is almost always a good thing) and less likelihood of running into health problems in the future. Making technique changes can be a frustrating process, but it's well worth the effort! Slow and careful repetition is the solution, and after enough practice, performing bar chords in with your thumb positioned as shown in this video will become your 'new normal'.
