The goal of the symposium is to bring together leading clinicians and scientists to review the state of the art in the diagnosis, pathophysiology and management of aerodigestive disorders in children, and build a foundation for advancing new scientific and therapeutic strategies. Aerodigestive disorders encompass a number of pathological conditions affecting the lungs, upper airway and gastrointestinal system in young children. With increasing prevalence in the pediatric population, and both recognition of these disorders and emerging evidence for best practice in the care of these patients, multidisciplinary teams to diagnose and treat these disorders have recently formed at many Pediatric centers around the country. Aerodigestive disorders remain challenging to treat effectively and the multidisciplinary approach has enabled and greatly improved efficient, high quality, and evidence-based care for these patients. While recent advances in this clinical care has primarily occurred in specialty centers, many children first present to general pediatric gastroenterologists with aerodigestive symptoms and there is, therefore, critical need to bring experts together to focus on advancing the care of children with aerodigestive disorders and to educate general providers on cutting-edge research advances and clinical innovations in aerodigestive medicine.
