Built in 1911, restored in the 2000s, and working like a charm. Best of all, she inspires young and wise, alike. Listen to our Gen Z volunteer engineer who explains the inner working of the engine, an engine built at a time when everything worked on a different time scale, when things were made more solidly and rugged, to last. And lasting, she does, our Slim Princess #18. A 1911-Baldwin 4-6-0, narrow-gauge engine, which was procured by the Southern Pacific Lines for operation on their Carson Colorado Railroad between Mound House, NV and Keeler, CA - serving the mining, logging, and farming communities on the western edge of the Great Basin and of Owens Valley. Every wondered how a steam engine works? Or how electricity is generated? Well, in this brief video - both are explained. Even though subconsciously I knew, it blew me away that a steam engine has a steam generator. And this steam generator with the onboard dynamo creates all the electricity needed on board. How genius is that. Today, bicycles don't even come any longer with dynamos to generate electricity for the lights needed at night. Who even knows the word dynamo or knows its principle of operation? What a pleasure to know that Gen Z does know more than the operation of phones - I am so grateful to have met our engineer and know we have a future with steam engines kept running. Did you know that prior to her restoration, SP 18, greeted HWY-395 travelers from a picturesque park in Independence. Currently, she has her very own engine house in Independence, CA, right next the Eastern California Museum.
