Government and private seed banks around the world maintain millions of seed varieties. Most were taken from traditional farming communities without compensation — and now corporate, government, and university breeders are their primary beneficiaries. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Nate Kleinman of Experimental Farm Network and Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance explains how to access these seeds, including navigating the USDA website, making requests, and increasing seeds from small samples to sustainable populations. He also offers examples of some seedbank-to-rematriation success stories and discuss ethical and political considerations involved with this sort of work. Speaker: Nate Kleinman This workshop recording comes from the 2024 Northeast Organic Farming Association of Massachusetts (NOFA/Mass) Winter Conference.
