Italy denies permission for U.S. military aircraft to land in Sicily before flying to Middle East

Italy has denied permission for U.S. military aircraft to land at the Sigonella air base in Sicily before flying to the Middle East. According to Daily Corriere della Sera, "some U.S. bombers" had been due to land at the base in eastern Sicily before heading to the Middle East. Corriere della Sera added that permission was not granted as the U.S. had not sought authorisation and Italy's military leadership was not consulted. While, Centre-left opposition parties in Italy have urged the govt to block the U.S. use of bases in Italy to avoid involvement in the conflict. PM Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government has said it would seek parliamentary authorisation should any such requests be made. However, the Italian defence ministry had no immediate comment on the reports. Earlier, Spain had also closed its airspace to U.S. planes involved in attacks on Iran, in addition to not allowing them to use the Moron and Rota military bases. The restrictions force the U.S. to bypass NATO member Spain, as its planes fly en route to their targets in the Middle East as part of U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Last week, PM Pedro Sanchez said the country was taking action as Spain is a "sovereign country that does not wish to take part in illegal wars". U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to cut trade with Madrid for denying the U.S. use of Spain's bases in the war. Meanwhile, Trump has alternately threatened to bomb Iran's civilian energy grid if the strait isn't opened.
