The definition of Gatekeeping is the act of keeping others away from something you like. This has been a problem within the metal fan base whether it’s at concert or online. Certain individuals stating that this and that band aren’t metal. You aren’t a metal fan for this and that reason. That being said, what is also said constantly is that the heavy metal fan base is a family so why does this persist? An examples of this decades ago was being called a ‘poseur’, and Lars Ulrich threw darts at Kip Winger’s photo in Metallica's Live S**t: Binge and Purge, this can be translated as – you’re either with us or against us. A modern examples can be asking people wearing metal T-shirts to name three songs by that band, metal fans online one-upping strangers on the internet by showing off the obscure artists they’re into, and older fans lamenting how their legacy bands sold out or peaked after their third album. Reasons why gatekeeping is a thing amongst metal fans: People are insecure Going back to the 1950s, social psychologists observed how easy it was to put people into in and out groups. It’s always been within human nature, to treat those who appear different to you or your in group. An example of this is treating those who have different tastes to you with disdain. This is why metal fans idolise the likes of Dio, Ozzy, Hetfield, Halford, Lemmy – because they’re outsiders. Poor social skills This I definitely resonate with as communication didn’t come naturally to me and I had learn through putting myself out there. But having poor social skills never made dismiss those who have different tastes to yours truly. You’re bound to come across people whom say they’re not gatekeepers and are inclusive…but they’re behaviour says otherwise. I site poor social skills here, because how many angry comments do you find on a metal related video which have been badly worded? This also goes back to what was said from the outset, about people wanting something to belong to. Even if this means making someone feel lesser than you. At the end of the day, people are going to like whatever.
