5 Types of People Excused from Fasting in Ramadan || Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan Link to the Original Video: • RAMADAN 2025: Everything You Need to Know ... . Who is allowed to break their fast in Ramadan? Is it only the sick? What about the elderly? Pregnant women? Travelers? And what if fasting becomes extremely difficult due to work or weakness? In this powerful fiqh lesson, Abdulrahman Hassan explains Siyām Ahl al-Aʿdhār — the fasting of those who are excused. This is essential knowledge for anyone who wants to understand Ramadan rulings properly without making the religion harder than Allah intended. 🌙 The 5 Categories of People Excused From Fasting 1️⃣ The Sick (Al-Marīḍ) There are two types of illness: ✔ Temporary Illness (Hope of Recovery) Examples: fever, flu, stomach illness. They may break their fast. They must make up the missed days later. No fidya required. ✔ Chronic Illness (No Hope of Recovery) Examples: permanent medical conditions, elderly weakness. They do not make up the fast. Instead, they pay fidya (feeding one poor person per day missed). What Is Fidya? The majority of scholars say: One Mudd (approximately 1.5kg) of staple food per day. Can be given daily or all at once for the month. Given in rice, wheat, or similar staple food. If a chronically ill person later recovers: The fidya already paid is sufficient. They do not need to make up past fasts. 2️⃣ The Traveler Travelers are allowed to break their fast. Important principle: The concession is not based on hardship alone. It is tied to the ruling of travel itself. Even if travel is comfortable (e.g., luxury flight), the concession remains. 3️⃣ Women in Menstruation or Postnatal Bleeding Fasting is invalid during menstruation. They must make up the missed days. They are not sinful for not fasting. 4️⃣ Pregnant & Breastfeeding Women If fasting harms: -The mother The child Or both They are allowed to break the fast. (Scholarly discussions exist regarding whether they make up the fast, pay fidya, or both depending on the situation.) 5️⃣ One Who Loses Consciousness If a person loses consciousness during fasting: The ruling depends on duration and awareness. Scholars discuss details based on whether they had intention and awareness during the day. ⚖️ Important Clarifications What Counts as “Sickness” in Shariah? Not every discomfort qualifies. You may break your fast if: Fasting increases your illness OR delays your recovery But simply having a hard job or feeling tired is not an excuse. What About Extremely Hard Work? Working long hours in heat is difficult — but difficulty alone is not a valid excuse. However, if a person genuinely fears: Fainting Severe physical harm Collapse Then they may break their fast based on strong likelihood of harm. Islam does not command self-destruction. Allah says: “Do not throw yourselves into destruction.” The religion is built upon ease — not recklessness, and not unnecessary hardship. ⚠️ Saving a Life While Fasting If saving someone’s life requires you to break your fast: You MUST save the life. You break your fast. You make up the day later. You are not sinful. Preserving life takes priority over fasting. 🌅 What If There Are 23 Hours of Daylight? As long as: There is distinguishable day and night Even if the night is very short You must fast according to local times. Only if fasting causes illness or harm does the concession apply. Final Reminder Islam is balanced. Allah wants ease for you — but within the framework He legislated. Understanding these rulings prevents: Unnecessary hardship False excuses And misapplication of concessions May Allah grant us understanding, sincerity, and acceptance in Ramadan. If this reminder benefits you, share it so others can fast upon knowledge and clarity. #Ramadan #Fasting #Fidya #IslamicFiqh #RamadanRulings #Sunnah #IslamicReminder
