China to boost hydropower storage as it builds world's biggest plant with capacity of 3.6 gigawatts

China is making inroads on its pumped storage hydropower industry with the addition of several massive facilities countrywide. Pumped storage hydropower describes a type of hydroelectric energy storage that includes two reservoirs at different elevations. Water from the lower reservoir is pumped to the higher one when energy demand is low, and when demand is high, the water is released to create energy as it falls down to the lower one. The country's largest, and the world's largest pumped storage power station is in northern Hebei province and boasts a total installed capacity of 3.6 gigawatts. Provinces across China are eyeing eligible regions to construct even more pumped storage stations.
