Loading and securing D7 3T, first impressions operating early Caterpillar.

Impressions first running a Cat Dozer. I will write while this is all fresh because this is the first time running an early Caterpillar Dozer. In many ways its way more fun starting a totally different Cat Gasoline engine - then immediately spanking it to wide open throttle - to make enough heat to fire an even cooler Caterpillar Diesel Engine. The One awaking the Other is a true symphony of many proportions. The low range, the no compression the half and run diesel compression explosions (when injecting diesel) are like the gasoline engine nightmare, played slow enough to hear each combustion event. But its all safe with the straight pipe high RPM scream of a gas engine bouncing on governor then more heat the merrier and then repeat if needed. Repeat means synchronization of the visceral clutch/brake, two speed transmission selection no grind (if possible) and engagement pinion handle - all Cat details, very pleasing in mixture, tempo and, physicality, feedback and action. All in all a far more visceral and crafty starting method to master, than the IHC foot starter button, the choke knob and the decompressor handle - as is typical on my 1943 International Harvester TD-9. The carb throat is so small it doesn't even need a throttle. This is not to say one method is better or simpler than the other. I know both systems have a tremendous amount of engineering built into them, but it just feels much more engaging and raw in the early Caterpillar Dozer, than in the early IHC machine. Positives - Cat pony motor makes all the sounds of a full on gasoline engine at high revs. There is even a timing advance for high rpm. There is also a ton of heat from the exhaust manifold by your hands and arms area which would be a plus in the winter. I was happy to have gloves nearby. The gasoline sputters and smells at high revs are interesting and ironic from such a large machine. Then the sounds of raw diesel madness quickly come to life with a 4 thumper rhythm difficult to describe. It is CATerpillerness and I am still a bit shocked which is why I am posting. I now need to try my hand at the big TD-24. Maybe I can resist becoming a Cat man. Negatives - In the day, I can see how some would think the IHC system more refined. Also preferred by persons who are not mechanically inclined or unable or unwilling to revert to starting anything with a hand crank. Positives - This summer learning was a far steeper learning curve than any university class could cover. I am very thankful to be around friends who helped me bring this Cat D7 T3 home to the Black Diamond Grindrod Ranch.
