In London Salvaged, a new short film from London Museum, we step inside three unexpected London ‘factories’—London Sneaker School, Absolute Beginners, and Metronomes Steel Orchestra—each repurposing London’s waste in imaginative and surprising ways. Londoners have always been resourceful and thrifty. In fact, there’s much we could learn from London’s past when it comes to sustainability. In London, almost any waste in the city could be sold to someone. Even brickdust was sold as a scourer to clean tough surfaces. Contrast that with today’s London, where we produce millions of tonnes of waste each year—much of it destined for landfill. But a shift is happening. Contemporary artists, makers—and museums—are drawing on London’s past to respond to today’s crisis of overconsumption and waste. This film is part of London and the Climate Emergency, our wider project exploring how Londoners are adapting to a changing city and a warming world. From new instruments forged out of old boilers to sneakers stitched from Savile Row offcuts, these London makers are transforming the city’s waste into objects of purpose, pride, and possibility.
