The old ZEISS INKO – Interference Contrast for the Standard Microscope The ZEISS INKO (Interferenzkontrast) is an early and elegant solution for enhancing contrast in transmitted-light microscopy. Developed for the classic Carl Zeiss Standard microscope, the INKO system allows transparent specimens to be visualized with high relief-like contrast by exploiting optical interference. In this video, I explain the individual components of the ZEISS INKO system. Unlike phase contrast, the ZEISS INKO produces contrast through optical path differences, making fine structures visible without staining. This makes it especially useful for biological specimens, thin sections, and transparent samples.
