This video shows the current state of my project — an MS-DOS program designed to display animated GIF files as fast as possible in CGA 160×100, 4 colors, even on very slow hardware such as a 286-class PC. The program plays animated GIFs as a smooth slideshow, decoding them on the fly and drawing directly into CGA video memory. Everything was designed with minimal hardware requirements in mind. The project was tested on a real 286 PC running at 12 MHz. It features two modes: /SAFE and /FAST. In /FAST mode, animations run noticeably faster while the image remains visually correct, without artifacts or glitches. The program supports a 160×100 unscaled display mode, centered on the screen — exactly as shown in the video. This is not the final version of the project yet, but the current state shows how far animated GIF playback can be pushed on very old hardware. The music you hear in the video was added during video editing to make it more enjoyable to watch — the program itself does not generate any audio. I also encourage you to check out my other project, UNREAL CGA — an attempt to bring the original Unreal (1998) to MS-DOS using CGA graphics. You can find more about this project on my YouTube channel.
