The 2024/25 ski season in the Alps had two sides: While freeriders desperately searched for fresh snow, ski resorts in Austria, Switzerland, and Italy recorded record sales. In Austria, precipitation levels were up to 45% below the long-term average. At the same time, 27% more hours of sunshine were recorded – a true "sunny winter." There was hardly any natural snowfall, especially at lower and mid-altitudes. Even in the high mountains – such as the Rudolfshütte or the Feuerkogel – snow depths remained well below previous record lows. This winter was a real challenge for freeriders. Many report weeks of searching for skiable deep snow, rocky runs, and canceled lines. Particularly bitter: Even at the Freeride World Tour stop in Fieberbrunn, the men's category could not take place due to a lack of snow cover. Climate change has long since become a reality in winter sports – this became more than clear this season. At the same time, ski tourism boomed. Thanks to modern snowmaking technology, many slopes were able to remain open. Combined with sunshine, vacations, and stable weather, this resulted in record numbers: over 17 million winter guests in Austria, double-digit increases in admissions, and, in some cases, historic revenues. In Vorarlberg, for example, mountain railway revenues were over 7% higher than the previous year. This season shows: winter sports today often function independently of natural weather – but at what cost?
