For example, let say you measure your toddler's head circumference and it is 45 cm. Then the math will be : 40*16/10=64. it means you need to cast on 64 stitches with an Aran yarn. However as I said it is for Aran size. If you would like to use finer yarn, then first you need to find what would be the required stitches for making 10 cm of fabric with that yarn. In that caste the number of 16 in my math will be different number. Another important thing, if you would like to work on brioche stitch for the edge, as I do, you need to multiple the number of stitches you get by 2/3.
