Can I get reviews while my book is on pre-order? | ARC readers post reviews to Amazon in pre-order?

So we know that reviews offer social proof and can help sell your book. A listing with no reviews can alarm a potential buyer. But when your book is on pre-order on Amazon, you can’t leave a review. The system won’t let a person review your book, even if they are an ARC reader. So, how do you see other people with reviews on their pre-order books? Today we’ll go over some strategies you can use to actually get reviews for your book while it is on pre-order. Editorial Reviews/Blurbs These are reviews you can start to gather before the book is even finished for formatting or goes up for pre-order from other authors and big names in your genre or area of expertise for non-fiction. While these won’t show up as a given star rating on your product listing, you have a special area in KDP, IngramSpark, and other self-publishing platforms where you can add these editorial reviews and blurbs that sing the praises of your book. As a pro tip, if a big-name person has been willing to read an early draft and provide a blurb, you should thank them big time and maybe ask them to tweet or share the news of your preorder or book launch to help with sales. Just saying. Goodreads and BookBub Even though retailer websites don’t allow for reviews to be posted before the book is on sale and live (aka while it is on preorder), ARC readers can still leave reviews on Goodreads, BookBub, or other book review sites like those ones. This is great because book lovers are on these sites, and the people hungry for more new titles to add to their TBRs are on these sites. So, yeah you definitely want reviews here too! eBook on sale, Print Book pre-order The next way that you can get reviews to show for your book while it is on pre-order is to have one format of the book on sale while the other format (or formats) are on preorder. This can be a little difficult to communicate with your audience, usually, it is nice to have one clear message: pre-order now, pre-order by X date, buy now. Having the options can get a little murky. But if you have enough ARC readers you can strategically have the ebook go on sale a week before your advertised launch day. That gives them a week to go in and leave their review before the print book is released. You may get some readers who are frustrated that they have to wait to get their copy when others have their digital copy now. But it gives you the opportunity to have those reviews show up earlier. The reviews for your eBook show up for the print and hardcover editions as well. So it’s up to you to weigh out which is more complicated to message and handle.
