The first Phylum we'll be looking at is Porifera, or sponges. Sponges are the simplest and most primitive animals. They have no true tissues or organs and filter food particles from the water. They have a porous body that is supported by a skeleton made of spicules or collagen. The next Phylum is Cnidaria, which includes jellyfish, coral, and sea anemones. Cnidarians have radial symmetry and specialized stinging cells called nematocysts. They have a simple digestive system and a nerve net for basic sensory processing. The third Phylum we'll be looking at is Platyhelminthes, or flatworms. Flatworms are flattened and have no body cavity. Some are parasitic, while others are free-living. They have a simple nervous system and can regenerate parts of their body. The fourth Phylum is Mollusca, which includes snails, clams, and octopuses. Mollusks have a soft body and a muscular foot for movement. Many have shells, which can be used for protection. They have a complex digestive system and a well-developed nervous system. Finally, the fifth Phylum we'll be looking at is Arthropoda, which is the most diverse and successful animal group. Arthropods include insects, spiders, crustaceans, and more. They have a hard exoskeleton, jointed legs, and specialized body segments. They have a complex nervous system, respiratory system, and circulatory system.
