Tempeh chips link (these are halal certified!): https://s.shopee.com.my/5faMMZtnjW?sh... (Affiliate link! I recommend thst you get the pasar malam ones as these are best, but these are good too - enjoy!) Malaysia's Bumiputra economy is an interesting one. If you don't know what Bumiputra is, it means Sons of the Earth, quite literally, and ties in to Malaysia's rich colonial history and story of development, historic economic segregation, and cleaving to ethnic groups as part and parcel of colonial policies. But what does it mean when people start going out there and then just casually selling allegedly 100% Bumiputra products, what does it mean for consumers, and what does it mean for Malaysia at large that this goes on? In this video, I do a little bit of an investigation into this economy... Through tempeh. The 100% Bumiputra Baby Tempeh came to me in a single strike of inspiration, and when I saw the 100% Bumiputra product logo though, I cannot help but deny that I felt extremely surprised, because it seemed like racial discrimination had just hit me on the head with a sledgehammer just as I was casually browsing the shelves for one of my favorite foods of all time! In this video, I go a little more into detail about that thought, and also the concerns that it raised in me along the way even as some of you raised the connections between what we saw here and religious manipulation, consumer concerns, and a potential new case for Akmal Saleh to highlight in his apparently ongoing quest to fight for race and religion. I'd like to emphasize that I don't discriminate against the Bumiputra community and that I make decisions on products not because of race or otherwise, but rather because of the quality of the product and the cost and make decisions on that basis. Nothing ideological about that. Although now that I think about it, I realize why some people might be interested in engaging in such initiatives. Even so though, there are some major concerns with this approach for both non-bumiputeras and bumiputeras, whether non-Muslim or Muslim, and once we manage to break through that divisive terminology, know this: It is a video for ALL Malaysians regardless of race and religion.
