During World War I, she was assigned to Battleship Division Nine, which was under the command of the Royal Navy. Following the outbreak of World War II, Arkansas conducted neutrality patrols. She also escorted convoys in the Atlantic after the United States entered the war. Later, she supported the Normandy landings and provided fire support for the invasion of southern France. In 1945, she provided fire support during the landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
