A playthrough of Absolute Entertainment's 1992 racing game for the NES, Alex Demeo's Race America. This video shows two runs through the game. In the first, I work my way up through the ranks of the rival racers. In the second (30:51), I race the champ, AJ Turbo, in every leg of the race to earn the best ending. Imagineering's take on the OutRun (   • OutRun (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoCom...  ), Corvette ZR-1 Challenge, was initially published under the Milton Bradley banner in 1990, exclusively in PAL territories. Two years later, Absolute Entertainment - Imagineering's publishing arm - brought the game to North America, sans license, as Alex Demeo's Race America. Race America is an arcade-style, ten-leg coast-to-coast event that sees you racing eight competitors from New York to Los Angeles. The game is similar to Square's Rad Racer (   • Rad Racer (NES) Playthrough  ), but with a few gimmicks tossed in to help differentiate it. Each leg begins with a drag race, serving as a test of reflexes that makes you dodge oil slicks as you grind your way to top gear as quickly as possible. Once you and your opponent have made it out of the starting blocks, you're presented with a dynamically shifting view of the action. The leader is shown in the top window, while the other guy is given the smaller window at the bottom of the screen. Whenever the racers draw close, the game shifts to a helicopter cam to show them jockeying for position, and once someone begins to pull away, the game shifts back to the split-screen view. The focus on head-to-head antics and the camera system give Race America some novelty value. The framerate is smooth, the controls are responsive, and it's nice to race against something other than a timer. It doesn't look as nice as Rad Racer - the tracks are less detailed, there are fewer ridges and dips in the roads, and there's no parallax scrolling in the background layer - but by NES standards, it looks good and runs well, and it's great to be able to play with a second player. I preferred Rad Racer's less-is-more approach to Race Amerca's focus on distracting gimmicks, but I had fun with Race America. It's not something I'd have bought at full price, but it would've been a great weekend rental. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
