Just like any city, D.C. has had it ups and downs. After World War 1, civic pride and culture became prominent. Art galleries, museums, concert halls, and the Lincoln Memorial were built. The Commission of Fine Arts was established to advise city planners on the appropriate design and placement of memorials and federal buildings. But during the Great Depression run-down buildings were multiplying in back alleys, and neighbourhoods became neglected. Still, Washington continued to develop into a modern city. Changing from a small Southern town into a major northeastern corridor metropolis that ranked with Boston and Philadelphia. Being that it was a political hotbed, D.C. was the epicenter of historical Riots, protests and famous speeches. It remains a somewhat racially and economically divided city. Most of European Americans live in Northwest D.C., while Southeast D.C. chiefly consists of a poor African American population, with more than half of the city’s inhabitants being African American. The immigrant population in the city and suburbs includes some of the country’s largest Ethiopian, Central American, and Korean communities. But with that being said, Washington is also a place similar to Los Angeles where many individuals come from other parts of the country to live, work and enjoy the arts. While it may not be the film industry, Washington’s abundance comes from federal civil service jobs and being a major tourist destination, the city’s economy is overwhelmingly dominated by the service sector. Most businesses are linked in some way to the federal government. For the more artistic, Washington offers a never-ending wealth of cultural opportunities. museums, galleries, and theatres are located in the city, many of which are internationally recognized. More money is spent per capita by the local government on the performing arts in D.C. than anywhere else in the United States. Cultural heritage festivals are held throughout the year. More than 750 libraries are located in the Washington area, including the Library of Congress, which contains the largest international collection of research materials in the world.
