Join me on this gorgeous summer's day as we follow the Dales Way beside the River Wharfe from Hebden Suspension Bridge, passing Linton Falls on our way to the quaint English village of Grassington. ► SUPPORT THE CHANNEL HERE https://buymeacoffee.com/walktheworld... With Grassington village planned as the final destination, this walk on the Dales Way is simply gorgeous. With bridges, stepping stones, an ancient church, waterfalls and even a hydro-electric plant to see along the way, this walk is full of interest and character. Grassington showed me two sides in one brief visit. The busy main street with tourists, eclectic shops and ice-creams, then once away from the crowds it's a peaceful and very beautiful Yorkshire village once again. I think you will enjoy this one folks, wherever you are in the world. The Dales Way is an 78.5 mile long-distance footpath in Northern England, from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, to Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria. The route mostly follows riverside paths and passes through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the gentle foothills of southern Lakeland to the shore of England's grandest lake. Hebden Suspension Bridge was officially opened on 26th September 1885 by William Atkinson Nowell amidst great excitement. A large marquee borrowed from Sir Mathew Wilson was erected on the Hebden side of the river, and tea was provided for up to 500 people. A brass band from Busk was hired to entertain at a cost of £2 10s, and a concert was laid on in the evening. The Anglican parish church of St Michael and All Angels sits alongside the River Wharfe near the ancient village of Linton. It also serves the larger commercial centre of Grassington across the river. The building has Norman origins, of which the font and some internal columns remain, and may occupy a much earlier site of worship, but most of the present building dates from 1861. Linton Falls on the River Wharfe consists of a natural limestone waterfall which can be crossed via a footbridge, and has a pair of artificial weirs. Linton Falls Hydro is a hydroelectric generating power station located on the Linton Falls Weir of the River Wharfe near Grassington. The power station is located on the same site as a hydroelectric scheme that was first opened in 1909, but had closed by 1948. The new scheme, which opened in March 2012, uses the original building which is now a scheduled monument. Grassington is situated in Wharfedale, about 8 miles from Bolton Abbey, and is surrounded by limestone scenery. Nearby villages include Linton, Threshfield, Hebden, Conistone and Kilnsey. The name Grassington derives from the Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon and Gothic languages, and means either the town of the grassy ings or a farmstead surrounded by grass. Grassington was used as the setting for the fictional town of Darrowby in the 2020 Channel 5 series All Creatures Great and Small, instead of Thirsk where the actual story took place.
