CivActs works with vendors in Bulawayo has surfaced the challenges informal traders face making a living in rural and urban municipalities. The International Labour Organization estimates that while 84% of working age Zimbabweans are employed, 76% are in informal employment, and 58.8%of these are women. Across the project, Civacts has found that vendors have difficulty accessing designated trading spaces, and often face harassment, including arrest and confiscation of their goods from municipal and law enforcement authorities. This documentary seeks to put a human face to these multiple challenges, focussing on the work of CivActs partner Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation VISET in Bulawayo and Goromonzi. CivActs has seen progress in this work, including increases responsiveness from municipal authorities. The Goromonzi Rural District Council has committed to increasing the designated trading spaces available for informal traders by constructing market stalls, and in Bulawayo, the city council has established a desk dedicated to addressing concerns from informal traders. This documentary is produced in collaboration with Film Fellowship alum Lance Chigodo.
