Speaker: Gin Muan Thang PhD Candidate Centre of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and LatinAmerican Studies (CSPILAS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Abstract: The presentation seeks to interrogate the continuity of culture and memory in contemporary Zo society. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors play an important role in reconstructing memory, remembrance, and unity among the social group. Cultural memory relates and reconfigures its knowledge to contemporary realities of the present. Although Cultural memory is seen as immovable, contemporary realities compel us to relate to them differently; sometimes by appropriation, criticism or by means of ways of preservation and/or transformation. In the case of Zo society, one defining moment is colonial intervention and its aftermath. It (re)defines the means and ways in how we remember ourselves and express our peculiarity and value systems. The presentation proposes to explore how cultural belonging and identity is being negotiated, imagined and appropriated in the present.
