April 2, 2025, is now being called "Liberation Day" by Donald Trump, marking the moment his administration imposed sweeping tariffs aimed at reshaping U.S. trade policy. These new measures include: A 10% baseline tariff on all imports Country-specific tariffs: China (32%), the European Union (20%), and India (26%) A 25% tariff on all imported automobiles While Trump argues that these tariffs will bring economic freedom by countering foreign trade imbalances, the reality is far more complex. Higher import taxes mean higher consumer prices, adding inflationary pressure that could complicate the Federal Reserve’s ability to stabilise the economy. Market Impact: A Stronger or Weaker USD? The USD has remained resilient in recent weeks, but these tariffs could shift the currency’s trajectory. If inflation rises, the Fed may have to take a more hawkish stance, delaying or reducing expected rate cuts. In contrast, global trade disruptions could hurt economic growth, pushing the Fed toward a more cautious approach. One notable market reaction has been the potential weakening of the euro (EUR/USD), with a possible short-term retracement to 1.10 before a further decline—potentially even reaching parity in the coming months. Meanwhile, if Australia and New Zealand release strong economic data, we could see the AUD and NZD strengthen against the US Dollar. Looking Ahead: Key Market Events The impact of these tariffs won’t be fully understood overnight. However, traders should closely watch the Non-Farm Payroll (NFP) report, as it could further shape the Fed’s policy decisions. What’s your outlook on these tariffs? Do they strengthen or weaken the USD? Share your thoughts below!
