FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA — The fatal campus shooting in Flagstaff, Arizona that left 1 student dead and 3 injured began as a confrontation between members of two different fraternities. ABC 15 reports that the suspected gunman was identified as 18-year-old Northern Arizona University freshman Steven Jones, who told police he was walking with two friends outside the Mountain View Hall dormitory when several people approached him. A fight ensued and Jones was reportedly hit in the face. Two people chased him as he ran to his car, where he retrieved a .40 caliber handgun. Jones used a flashlight affixed to the gun to illuminate the scene before firing shots at the two people approaching, both of whom were about 10 feet away. More shots were fired before Jones was subdued, resulting in one death and three injuries. Reuters reports that the student who died has been identified as Colin Brough, while the three wounded are Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek, and Nicholas Piring. All four were freshmen and members of the Delta Chi fraternity. The suspect was reportedly a pledge in another fraternity, Sigma Chi. Representatives from both fraternities have stated that the incident was not associated with any chapter event, according to CNN. Jones has been charged with first-degree murder and 3 counts of aggravated assault.
