I must admit I'd never heard of it before we noticed on the map a strange looking land mass on the west coast full of sea inlets and peninsulas and decided we had to check it out. We started off at Crinan, looking for the start of the Crinan Canal. We then went to Arichonan Township, an abandoned village high on a ridge, looking down onto the sea inlet Caol Scotnish and out to the Sound of Jura. This village was cleared as part of the Highland Clearances and in many ways typifies the clearance experience of many tenant arable farmers. These families, many of them clan members, had tended the land for centuries, however, a combination of factors led landlords, often very wealthy individuals, in this case based in Mayfair, London to lose patience with what they saw as low returns from arable farming and cleared the land for more profitable sheep farming. In many cases this was carried out without warning, without empathy and without provision of alternatives for the tenant farmers, who were simply expected to move on and fend for themselves elsewhere. Many tenants emigrated to foreign shores as the Scottish Highlands suffered a period of huge depopulation. Any resistance was met with the full force of the law, with Sheriffs and police involved to arrest the tenants. In some cases, their thatched cottages were set alight to make them leave. Here at Arichonan, they did not go quietly. They rioted and saw off the initial attempts of the law agencies to remove them and ultimately many ended up in Inverary Jail for their pains. The abandoned buildings are what remains of their homes and a barn, however, the first buildings you see on arrival are sheep pens and a large house built using stone from the former tenants abandoned houses, the dwelling of a shepherd, brought in after the evictions to manage the sheep farming, so we are seeing the remains of the settlement both pre and post eviction here. Please see attached a link to an article which gives more information on Arichonan and its history. https://www.imaginealba.com/single-po... After a visit to Tayvallich, the most prominent village on the peninsula, we went on a forest walk, primarily to try to see beavers following their reintroduction to the area. As with all wildlife spotting, the chances of seeing your intended target are slim and so it proved that day. In the forest, there were further remains of a settlement from the same era as Arichonan, called Kilmory Oib. It is unclear why this settlement was abandoned not long after events at Arichonan, though given what was happening in the area, you would have to suspect that it went the same way of its neighbour. Interestingly, one of the tenants from Arichonan, who was jailed, settled here after his release. Sadly, it seems this did not provide a stable home for him and his family after their uprooting.
