'Has Iran’s Morality Police Been Scrapped and Will Protests Now End?' Iran is experiencing the most sustained anti-regime protests since the founding of the Islamic republic. They were brought about by the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly, and killed in police custody. After two-and-a-half months, Iran's Attorney General has said the morality police is being shut down. The unit was formed in 2006 to enforce the country's Islamic dress code - including the mandatory hijab. Their vans haven’t been seen in public recently, but Iranian state media have strongly pushed back on the comments, saying the decision would be made by the interior ministry, which is in charge of the force, not the judiciary. The interior ministry is yet to comment. Even if the unit is being shut down, this won’t necessarily bring an end to the decades-old law around the mandatory hijab.
