To give some background on the content here: This video series was recorded shortly after ThinkOrSwim was sold to TD Ameritrade. ThinkOrSwim is the leading trading software on the market and was created by Tom Sosnof. Karen used the software in her trading strategy. The draw was that she was managing such a massive amount of money using the software. Even though her strategy is built up in the videos as being a new discovery, it is in reality a very basic strategy. She is selling options for the S&P 500 on both the call side and the put side and going out far enough to be safe 95% of the time (2 standard deviations). As long as the S&P 500 did not fall below the put strikes or go above the call strikes, she would collect the premium. In the video series, she talks more in depth about what she would do in the rare times that the S&P 500 became more volatile and crept up towards her strikes. One of the most common defensive plays is something called "rolling the option", which means you close out the current option contract and simultaneously open a new option contract with all the same specifications except the expiration date is further out in time, giving the underlying price more time to revert back to the mean. It also appears that she always kept cash on the sideline (1:20:40) to help her roll up a tested side (58:58), which means she would close the at-risk contracts and open a new one with the same specifications except the strike price is further away from the current underlying price. She has also talked about her fee structure, which was designed to only collect fees in the months where she made her clients money, and did not collect fees when they didn't. Shortly after the recording of these videos, the publicity caught the eye of the government. The SEC ended up bringing violations against her for the combination of the fee structure along with the rolling of the options. They claimed she was timing the rolling of the contracts to collect more fees from her clients. She ended up settling with the SEC to avoid costly litigation. She mentions part of the settlement was that she can no longer trade for other individuals and cannot speak about the specifics of the case. However, it appears the situation would have been avoided if the fee structure had been a flat monthly fee regardless of performance. She recently wrote a book titled "The Lamb of Wall Street" which details the work she did through the non-profits she had. As of 2025, the non-profits appear to either be defunct, merged, or without an online presence. If you are trying to learn how to sell options, Karen does a fantastic job in this video series of explaining how to do so in a safe and effective manner. 0:00 May 2012 24:56 October 2012 1:26:27 February 2014 2:30:25 August 2014
