Vultures feeding at a carcass make brutal and alien-like sounds - hissing, wheezing, rattling, yelping, flapping and many acoustic textures I find difficult to describe. Species include White-backed, Hooded and Lappet-faced vultures. There's also a Marabou stork in the video but I don't think it called much. On my sound recording expedition to Zambia I managed to mic up a couple of hippo carcasses, and at one of them the vultures arrived in big numbers on the second day, once the hyenas had opened it up. They fought over access and punished whoever tried to jump the established pecking order. My microphones were 2 meters away hidden in a tree so I captured all this with lots of detail, for hours on end. Vultures are amazing creatures but often maligned and misunderstood as harbingers of death. They feed on carcasses almost exclusively and it's not difficult to see why they're associated with death. Truth is, they perform a much needed and irreplaceable service by cleaning dead animals from the ecosystem so they don't rot and become breeding grounds for disease. I've been trying to capture something like this ever since my first trip to Africa in 2016. Unfortunately there are many challenges and access to a carcass in the African savanna is not easy. I even bought a sheep and slaughtered it once, but as soon as I put it out a big storm arrived and I had to leave. Anyway, on this trip everything went smoothly and I managed to get my mics very close to the action. Many thanks to the Bushcamp Company for hosting me and to my companions Alick and Shawa for the assistance. This happened fairly close to a main road in the national park so occasionally there was the sound of distant engines (including when I shot this video). I had to use recordings from earlier in the day and I did a bit of layering to match the audio with the visuals. Recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Clippy EM272 microphones in South Luangwa NP, Zambia.
