This video taken in 2020, shows my 16-year-old naturally gaited Tennessee Walking Horse mare and I working through a variety of exercises to improve flexibility and full range of motion. Shown are dressage exercises as the flechi droit to stretch the outside neck muscles and improve shoulder balance; shoulder in and haunches in; shoulder fore at a flat walk; counter bend turns at a fox trot to improve balance and lighten the shoulders before canter transitions; rein back and half steps to piaffe to improve engagement. The smooth gaits shown in this video are a variety of walks, canter, fox trot, flat walk, and running walk in a variety of expressions including the neck extension. These exercises help the naturally gaited horse find balance over the body mass, lighten the forehand and shoulders, engage the hindquarters, abdominal muscles, and thoracic sling, and help the horse relax the mouth, lower jaw and poll, and stretch the top line and spine for full range of motion. Plus, these exercises break up pacey lateral movement for smooth natural gaits.
