I came to Malacca expecting a normal city explore. Instead, I kept finding unfinished projects and empty spaces. On Pulau Melaka (Malacca Island), you can see huge buildings with almost no signs of life. I looked at the small clues like disconnected water and electricity meters, and “for sale” signs everywhere. I asked locals what happened, and got simple answers: after lockdown, many places went quiet, and rent got cheap. Then the contrast hit me. Right next to all this “big plan” energy, there’s the Portuguese Settlement (Kristang community). A real community that’s been here for centuries, with its own creole Portuguese language still used inside the community. And when I dug deeper, I found the abandoned Malacca monorail. It was built for tourism, failed early, reopened later, and still ended up rusting away.
