An Aero Oy passenger plane on a scheduled flight was shot down in the Gulf of Finland in June 1940. The two-man crew and all seven passengers died in the crash. Finland was a country in the midst of a period of peace, and the political situation in the Soviet Union was extremely difficult. The government had precise intelligence on the shooting down, but in the heat of the moment it was decided to conceal the cause of the crash. Censorship and cover-up naturally caused outrage, and all sorts of theories have been floated around the issue.
