🚇 There’s “enormous concern” among the thousands of people involved in the Gateway Tunnel Project, as work is set to be halted next week on Feb. 6 if the federal government doesn’t unlock funds. At a hearing on Tuesday, everyone from union workers to elected officials described what’s at stake should the funding run dry. For starters, about 1,000 workers will immediately lose their jobs. The project—decades in the making—will build new tunnels under the Hudson River between New Jersey and Manhattan, replacing tunnels that have seen a century of wear and tear. It’s seen as vital not only for the New York City area’s economy but for the entire Northeast, as the tunnels move hundreds of thousands of people every day. “What we know is that projects like this that take a decade or longer to do, they have to continue uninterrupted,” said Tom Wright, president and CEO Regional Plan Association, comparing the all the coordinated work to “a cord that runs 10 years into the future.” “There’s enormous concern that if that cord gets cut next week, we’re going to be months if not years behind schedule, billions of dollars in funding,” he said. The federal budget director has referenced “unconstitutional DEI principles" as a reason for freezing the money. Tom Prendergast, head of the Gateway Development Commission, said they’re still talking with the feds and remain hopeful. “The bottom line is we need to get the money restored and funding coming from the federal government,” Prendergast said. Ironworker John Mooney was among those who testified. He addressed President Donald Trump about what’s at stake. “I decided to talk directly to the president, because that’s the person I was told is holding up the funds that’s keeping me and my family not working,” he said. 🎤 Mack Rosenberg reports 📸 Mack Rosenberg, Gateway Development Commission 🔊 Tune into 1010 WINS at 92.3 FM for more local news #nyc #nycnews #newjersey #newyorkcity #njnews #newyorknews #gateway #gatewayproject #njtransit #amtrak
