Farmers’ Ordeal Continues in Ganjam as Paddy Remains Unsold Due to Mandi Mismanagement

The misery of farmers in Ganjam district shows no sign of ending. After months of hard work, farmers who have harvested paddy are now forced to guard their produce in open threshing yards due to severe mismanagement at procurement mandis. With bags of paddy lying unattended, farmers are unable to return home peacefully. Many are spending both day and night at the threshing floors, protecting their year-long effort from damage. Braving cold nights and dew, the threshing yard has effectively become their home—where they eat, sleep, and wait. From sowing to fertiliser shortages and now procurement hurdles, farmers say cultivating paddy feels like a costly mistake this year. Although mandis have opened in the district, many have not received procurement targets. In several areas, farmers are yet to receive gunny bags, forcing them to make three to four rounds of mandis repeatedly. Adding to the crisis, several rice mills are yet to receive targets, resulting in no lifting of paddy from threshing yards. Many farmers have also not received tokens, while others received SMS alerts allowing procurement of far less quantity than their actual harvest. Confused and distressed, farmers are unsure where to turn or whom to approach. In Dharakote area, despite receiving tokens, farmers allege their paddy is not being procured citing “no target availability”. As a result, they continue to stay overnight at threshing yards, enduring harsh winter conditions while waiting for relief.
