The 89th element in the periodic table, Actinium, was discovered from the left-overs of Radium's detection by the Curies. It lends it's name to the row of elements below the lanthanides - called the "actinides" - whose members mimic many of the chemical traits of their neighbors above, with the exception of the fact they are all radioactive. All Actinium isotopes have relatively short half-lives meaning the only place you'll find the element is in ores where Actinium is the daughter isotope from higher in the periodic table, specifically, Uranium and Thorium ores. Currently, it's only application is a possible treatment for some cancers, but this is only being researched right now as there is not enough of the Actinium-225 isotope to roll this out on a large scale.
