The all-new Astra is such a huge improvement over the old car that you wonder whether it’s actually a Vauxhall. And yes, the new Golf Mk8 should absolutely be worried. You could argue that the Astra is the first example of Vauxhall joining Stellantis, the European motoring group that includes Citroen, Peugeot and DS among many others. It shares the same platform as the new Peugeot 308 and there are barely any carry overs from Vauxhall’s old parts bin. That means you get a brand new interior with a great mix of buttons and touch controls, plus a host of new engines that includes a plug-in hybrid motor with up to 35 miles of electric only range.
