Painting a classical still life with oil paint

My former school (Hotel Management School in Maastricht) is organizing a benefit evening together with the Conservatorium to raise funds for students who would otherwise not be able to study. I was asked to paint a piece that brings the worlds of food and music together. I am honored with this assignment, and I am very pleased with the end result. I learned a lot during the creation of this piece! The composition centers around the theme of food and music. Right from the start I knew I wanted to have a violin in the piece since my wife and daughter both play the violin. In addition, I wanted to use pure and recognizable ingredients which form a delicious combination together. The composition invites the viewers to keep watching thanks to the details and shapes used. Besides this, I have given attention to subtle references. For example, there is a reference to the Conservatorium and Maastricht via the sheet music of composer Strauss (which is often played by André Rieu). Moreover, the connection between food and music is noticeable in the peppercorns which are coming from underneath the sheet music, and thanks to the shadow play which makes them look a bit like music notes. #art #painting #oilpainting #stilllife #violin #gastronomy #paintingprocess #classic
