B. A. I (Sem. II) English Compulsory Chapter 2: A Career एक व्यवसाय R. K. Narayan R. K. Narayan (1906–2001), born in Madras, is one of the best of the first generation of Indian novelists in English. He published 10 novels and many short stories. The Guide is the most famous novel. He created an imaginary town named Malgudi in his works. About the chapter: It is the story of a simple shopkeeper and Ramu. The shopkeeper believed Ramu and lost his business. Finally, Ramu himself was ruined. Characters: The narrator: is the writer (the shopkeeper). His family: wife and son Ramu: a 20-year-old boy. Spots: Lawley Extension, The National Provision Stores, elementary school, Trichinopoly, Madras, Mempi Hills, Tirupati Hill, Career: The National Provision Stores, sale of butter and ghee, trade of coffee The shopkeeper (narrator): the narrator in the story is the shopkeeper. He took a small building and started “The National Provision Stores." There was an elementary school प्राथमिक शाळा, and the students would run to the shop for sweets, ribbons, and fancy stationery. He paid a rent of five rupees and took a small house on Kabir Street, over a mile from the shop. He was living happily with his family. He tries to help people around him. The narrator was generous, helpful, and kind उदार, उपयुक्त आणि दयाळू to the people. Due to his good behaviour, his career was going well. Narrator and the Residences of Lawley Extension लॉली विस्तार: The narrator is always ready to help the residents of the area. He is a saviour तो रक्षणकर्ता आहे. The colony consisted of less than a hundred houses. He went door to door and got orders for his small shop. He offered some discounts to the people. Later, he started working in the narrator’s shop. He was working hard. The customers were pleased with Ramu. He was treated as a family member. Ramu was trying to do the best of his capacity for the shop, the customers, and the family of the narrator. Narrator goes to Madras: The narrator had gone to Madras for the sale of butter and ghee लोणी आणि तूप. It was a profitable business for the narrator. It was now routine for the narrator to go to Madras. So, the shop was entirely in Ramu’s hands for a long time. Ramu dealt with the business and accounts of the narrator. He pretended ढोंग केले that his father was dying of cholera and ran away. When the narrator opened his shop in the absence of Ramu, the shop was empty. The account books were full of mess गोंधळाने भरलेला. The wholesale supplier dues had gone to Rs. 3500, and not a single installment was paid against them for three months. Money sent by the narrator from time to time hadn’t reached the supplier. Narrator becomes bankrupt दिवाळखोर: due to Ramu’s misbehaviour and cheating, the narrator becomes bankrupt. He was being deceived फसवले by Ramu. The narrator had nothing to live on. He had to sell his shop and everything else to pay off his creditors. His family moved from place to place. His family was forced to live on the charity of friends and relatives. Their condition was very miserable. The narrator’s second business: everything was difficult for the narrator. A coffee estate owner in Mempi Hills gave him a fresh start, and the narrator did well in the trade of coffee. Once again, he was on the way to progress. His new business was going well. The narrator sees Ramu once again. When the narrator was climbing the steps of Tirupati Hill, he heard Ramu’s voice. He could identify Ramu’s voice. He stopped and turned towards the voice and saw Ramu. He sees him as blind and a beggar. The narrator was confused as to how to react to him. He felt unhappy. He dropped a coin on his palm and passed on. Ramu as a blind beggar: now Ramu was blind and begging in front of the temple. The narrator wanted to know about him. He inquired about him with another beggar. He came to know that Ramu was not a beggar but a sanyasi. He came there two years ago.
