It's hard to grow in bad soil. This first video shows what happens when hard-working students are planted in bad academic soil. Listen carefully as students describe a familiar frustration: they attend class, take notes, study hard — and still feel blindsided by exams. They know the content, but not the concepts. They wish professors would just “tell them what will be on the test.” This isn’t a motivation problem. It’s a soil problem. These students are operating with high-school learning assumptions that don’t transfer well to college environments. In farming language, there are stones in the soil — hidden beliefs about how learning works that block deep understanding. Use this clip with: -faculty -learning center staff -first-year instructors -tutors and coaches -parents of college or high school students What "stones" are in your students' soil? Share the misaligned beliefs and practices you've encountered. This video is part of the Four Seasons of Academic Success series — practical, field-tested strategies for cultivating real learning, stronger retention, and Enrollment Health. 🌾 Join the weekly series here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/s...
